In view of the recent incidents in the Ready Made Garments (RMG) industry, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) organised a dialogue titled Work Environment in the RMG Sector and Labour Safety: Consequences and What Needs to be Done at the CIRDAP Auditorium on 26 January 2013. Mr Md Israfil Alam, MP, Chairman, Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Labour and Employment attended the programme as the Chief Guest while Mr Mikail Shipar, Secretary, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Ambassador Nazrul Islam Khan, Executive Director, Bangladesh Institute of Labour Studies (BILS), and Mr Nasir Uddin Chowdhury, First Vice President, Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) attended as the Special Guests. The event was chaired by Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya, Distinguished Fellow, CPD. Dr Khondaker Golam Moazzem, Additional Director Research, CPD presented a paper titled Occupational Safety Risks in the RMG Sector: Challenges and Way Out to initiate the discussion. The discussion at the dialogue centred around safety of workers at the workplace, trade union rights, role of the concerned government agencies, BGMEA and buyers. The recent fire incident in the Tazreen Fashion featured prominently in the discussion.
