Appreciation Course for the Journalists on Current National and Global Issues

Introduction

CPD is keen to contribute to capacity Building of the young professionals of Bangladesh in areas of its institutional specialisation. CPD has undertaken a number of initiatives in this respect, which included lectures, training and policy appreciation workshops. As part of this initiative CPD has, in the past, organised a series of courses on Trade Policy Analysis for the relevant officials from the government, business and trade bodies and the media. Courses were also conducted for the students of Economics and Business with particular focus on current macroeconomic management issues.

In continuation of this capacity building initiative of CPD, a two-day training programme titled “Appreciation Course on Current National and Global Issues” is being planned exclusively for young Journalists of Bangladesh. The course is designed to improve the understanding of journalists covering business, economic and diplomatic beats about contemporary macroeconomic management issues and issues related to MDGs and post-2015 international development agendas.

Objectives of the programme

The objectives of this programme are to: (a) raise awareness about the current issues of macroeconomic management, their implications for the economic development of Bangladesh and challenges ahead; (b) apprise the ongoing global debates as regards delivery of the MDGs; and (c) improve understanding about the post-2015 development agenda, particularly with regard to its concepts, processes, discourse, data situation, and proposed Goals, Targets and Indicators.

Content and design of the programme

Following topics will be covered under the programme:

  • Basic concepts of macroeconomic management, structural shifts in the Bangladesh economy, and emerging challenges
  • MDG achievements and post-MDG targets and key implementation challenges

The programme will start with a brief introductory session which will elaborate on the programme design, its objective and nature of engagement of the participants.

Design of the course will include presentation on the topics and follow-up discussions. Participants will be then divided into groups to have more interactive discussion on pre-designed assignments on the same topic followed by a presentation on the respective group work(s) and discussion. This approach will be followed for both the topics. The participants will be given a reading list on both the topics beforehand to prepare for the sessions.

The programme will end with a closing session and certificate awarding ceremony.
