The Case of the Readymade Garments

CPD-Research-Monograph-2 (2008)The research monograph presents the findings of the CPD research project on Gender and Trade Liberalisation in Bangladesh: The Case of the Readymade Garments. The study, based on a field level survey, explores the gender-differentiated effect of trade liberalisation on the RMG sector. The monograph tries to investigate how adjustments occur in the Bangladesh RMG sector in response to the new competitive global environment; analyses the changes in the cost of production, profitability, wages and employment during the post-MFA period; and examines the key trends that are expected to have short and medium-term impact on the sector. The monograph also tries to look at the impact of the MFA at the firm level, the nature and extent of gender-discriminatory consequences of the MFA phase-out, and factors related to their income earnings.
