Economist Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya has said people who donate blood are the national hero of the country as they are playing highest role for the suffering humanity.
“Self- driven blood donation would be the priority index to measure humanity in the world if anyone wants to measure it,” Dr Bhattacharya made the comments while speaking as the chief guest at a function organised by Quantum Foundation at the National Press Club in the city on Friday.
The Quantum Foundation, a volunteer organistion to develop inner human quality, arranged the function in honour of over 200 blood donors who donated bloods at least 10 times to 25 times to save people of all strata.
Also distinguished fellow of Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Bhattacharya termed the blood donors ‘bloodhero’ (Raktobir) and said the social movement created during the last 25 years in the case of blood donation should be spread more to meet the country’s future demand for blood.
Fifty per cent of the country’s demand for blood could be met through spreading social movement on blood donation, he added.
Chief coordinator of Quantum Foundation Madam Nahar Al Bokhari while presiding over the function hoped that the donors would spread the message of blood donation throughout the country to meet future demands.
Among others, foundation’s blood donation programme’s honorary director and professor of Hematology Department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University Dr ABM Yunus, Dr Sabrina and Azfia also spoke on the occasion. The country has a demand for 600,000 safe blood bags per year against which the Quantum Foundation is able to save about 750,000 people during the last one decade, according to a press release.

‘Those who donate their own bloods to others are national heroes.’ Noted economist of the country and also an honorable fellow of CPD (Center for Policy Dialogue) Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya made this comment while he called the blood donator ‘Blood Hero’. Quantum Foundation honored over 200 blood donators who have donated bloods at least 10 to 25 times with crests, medals, certificates etc. at the program. On Friday at the Press Club at 10.00 am remaining as the chief guest Dr. Debapriya Bhattacharya further told that if anyone likes to find out a humanitarian index, he will find blood donating as the best. He also told we must extend this movement of blood donating more and more and within 20 years through this social movement we want to meet 50 percent demand not 25 percent.
In the function honorary director of Quantum Foundation’s blood donating program Prof Dr. ABM Younus who is also a professor of hematology department of BSMMU made the welcomwe speech. To express her own feelings over the blood donators, Dr Sabrina Yasmin made a significant speech while did the same from the blood receivers camp Asfia, a thelasemia patient. Quantum Foundation’s chief coordinator Madam Nahar Al Bokhari presided over the function. In her presidential speech she expressed her gratefulness to those donating bloods regularly. She told in her speech that none can give anything in return for any gift or donation. It is only the creator who can do this. She inspired those who donate bloods regularly and also urged them to inspire others to do so with a view to meeting up the whole demand for blood in the country. It is mentionable that in our country we need about 6 lakh bags of blood every year. To satisfy such a quantity of blood Quantum Foundation has been carrying out voluntary blood donating programs and making people conscious since 1996. With the efforts for the last 12 years this foundation has played roles to save lives of 7 lakh people and a half.

Quantum Foundation honours voluntary blood donors

Encouraging people to donate blood, Quantum Foundation on Friday honoured some 200 blood donors who had donated blood 10 times to 25 times in their life. At a function at National Press Club in the city, the foundation’s Voluntary Blood Donation Programme officials said there was a yearly demand of 6 lakh bags of blood in the country and the benevolent people were fulfilling some 25 per cent of the demand without seeking any reward.
Attending the programme, policy analyst at Centre for Policy Dialogue, Debapriya Bhattacharya, said a social motivation could increase the rate of voluntary blood donation to at least 50 per cent from 25 per cent. He described the voluntary blood donors as national heroes.
Presiding over the function, Quantum Foundation chief coordinator Madame Nahar Al Bukhari congratulated the voluntary blood donors and said none can truly reward a blood donor but the foundation was keen to encourage the blood donors. The blood donors and blood receivers expressed their feelings in the function. The Voluntary Blood Donation Programme’s honorary director and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University haematology Professor ABM Yunus, among others, spoke at the function.

Speakers at a function in the city termed voluntary blood donors as “Rakta Beer” (blood donation heroes) as Quantum Foundation on Friday honoured them with crests, medals and certificates, reports BSS. The contributors, who donated blood at least 10 or 25 times, were honoured at the function at Jatiya Press Club where eminent economist and distinguished fellow at the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya was present as the chief guest. Chief Coordinator of Quantum Foundation Madam Nahar Al Bokhari chaired the function, while honourary director of Quantum Foundation and Professor Dr ABM Yunus delivered the welcome address. On behalf of the blood donors, Dr Sabrina Yasmin, and on behalf of persons taking blood, thalassemia patient Asfia spoke.
Describing the voluntary blood donors as “Rakta Beer”, Dr Debapriya said: “If anybody wants to find out the biggest “index of humanity” in the world, then voluntary blood donation would be such an index.” Putting emphasis on expanding such a noble social movement, the economist expressed the hope that it (movement) could meet 50 percent demand of blood in the next 20 years.
The function was informed that there is an annual demand of nearly six lakh bags of blood in the country. To meet this demand, Quantum Foundation has been conducting voluntary blood donation campaign since 1996 to raise mass awareness about the important issue. The organisation has been able to play a crucial role in saving the life of 7.50 lakh people through its two-decade strides, it said.
