State of the Bangladesh Economy and Budget Responses 2008
This paper examines the proposed budget of FY2007-08 in the context of prevailing trends in the Bangladesh economy. It discusses the benchmark conditions for the budget and the challenges ahead facing the Bangladesh economy over the next fiscal year. The review analyses some key features of the budget FY2007-08 with a view to examining their impact on the economy. Economic growth and income, saving and investment trends, along with an overview of possible employment scenario are discussed in terms of the delivery of the Poverty Reduction Strategy (PRS) and the new medium term outlook. The review ends with a discussion on a number of challenges standing in the way of implementation of various measures to be undertaken by the current government in FY2007-08.
