Dr Mahabub’s death condoled
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith and a host of local economists expressed his profound shock at the death of renowned economist and professor of BRAC University Dr Mahabub Hossain.
In a message of condolence, Muhith said Mahabub was not only famous in the country, but he was also equally well-known as an economist at the international level, reports BSS.
Dr Mahabub Hossain died of heart disease at Cleveland Hospital, the USA on Sunday at the age of 71.
Mahabub made significant contribution to research at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) in the Philippines, the minister said.
The nation will remember him forever for his valuable contributions to agricultural research and innovation, Muhith said.
The minister prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul and conveyed deep sympathy to the bereaved family members.
In another message eminent economists and civil society members of the country also expressed their deep condolence at the death of Dr Mahabub Hossain.

In a press release they said that Dr Hossain would be remembered for his pioneering research on rural development, micro-credit, agrarian structure and the rice economy of Asia.
In another message, Bangladesh Economists’ Forum (BEF) and the Policy Research Institute of Bangladesh (PRI) jointly expressed their deep condolence and heartfelt sympathy to the bereaved family.
Dr. Mahabub Hossain, a renowned development economist, was also a founding member of the BEF.

Economist Dr Mahabub passes away

Dr Mahabub Hossain, one of the best known agricultural and development economists in Bangladesh and South Asia, passed away at a US hospital on Sunday after a battle with heart disease. He was 71.
He went to the US on December 15 last year for treatment. He breathed his last on the operating table at the Cleveland Clinic, Ohio, at 3:45pm US time on Sunday (2:45am Monday Bangladesh time), according to his long-time employer Brac.
Mahabub had been suffering from heart disease for the last two years. He is survived by his wife, two daughters and a son.
Before his death, Mahabub was an adviser to the executive director of Brac, the world’s largest non-governmental organisation, and a distinguished professor and chairperson of economics and social science department at Brac University.
The eminent economist served as the head of social science division of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), executive director of Brac, and director general of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS).
He spent 15 years (1992-2007) at the IRRI with a dual role as both researcher and administrative head.
Mahabub made substantial contributions to research on development economics and agricultural policy in South and Southeast Asia. Throughout his long career as an active researcher and research manager, he contributed to the advancement of knowledge in many fields such as agrarian structure and land reforms; rural non-farm activities; technology, credit and infrastructure policies; income distribution and poverty; and Asian rice economy.
His research based on detailed analysis of primary data collected from household level sample surveys has been instrumental in developing a deeper understanding of the operation of rural economy in general and the rice sector in particular.
Brac said it deeply mourns the sad demise of Dr Hossain.
Brac Founder and Chairperson Sir Fazle Hasan Abed said very few people globally had the depth of understanding of development issues like Dr Mahabub Hossain.
“His life was a story of success against all odds, and during his time at Brac, he had a persistent focus on creating opportunities for the poor.”
Mahabub’s research over many decades on proliferation of innovation in agriculture and livelihood improvement of marginalised farmers has been path breaking, said Abed.
“We, his Brac family, mourn today this irreparable loss with his friends, family and many people he touched during his life dedicated to public service.”
In a condolence message, Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus said, “I am deeply shocked and sad to learn about the untimely death of Dr Mahabub Hossain.”
He said, “Dr Mahabub Hossain was a brilliant scholar. His contributions in the field of economics and agricultural research were groundbreaking and far-reaching.”
Mahabub was the first scholar to study Grameen Bank and produce a highly demanded research paper on the impact of Grameen Bank, Yunus said.
“His insights in that paper were tremendously valuable to Grameen Bank as it expanded and grew. Above all, his deep commitment to social justice, his empathy for marginalised people, and his humility made him stand out as an extraordinary human being. His death is an irreplaceable loss for the country, and the global community of agricultural researchers,” said Prof Yunus.
In a statement, Bangladesh Bank Governor Atiur Rahman said Dr Mahabub was second to none in agricultural research.
He was actively involved in devising credit support and its implementation for sharecroppers in the country, said the central bank chief.
After completing his masters in economics from Dhaka University, Dr Mahabub obtained his PhD from the University of Cambridge in the UK.
He had published many research articles in international journals. Some of his seminal books are: Asian Rice Bowls A Returning Crisis, Rice Research in Asia: Progress and Prospects, Impact of Rice Research in Asia, Strategy of Development in Bangladesh, and Rural Economy and Livelihoods Insights from Bangladesh.
Mahabub was awarded the first gold medal from the Agricultural Economist Association in 1984 for contributing to the understanding of the operation of rural economy.
The Foreign Policy, an international magazine on politics and economics, featured him in its list of 500 most prominent individuals in the international arena. He was the first Bangladeshi to have achieved the fame.
Tributes also poured in on social media following the news of his death, which came just a day after his 71st birthday on January 2.
Gene Hettel, senior science editor and historian at the IRRI, wrote on his Facebook page: “Upon the passing of Mahabub Hossain, we have lost a great friend and a colleague in the realm of agricultural research.
“It was a privilege and great pleasure to know and work with him at the IRRI.”
Prof Abdul Bayes, former vice-chancellor of Jahangirnagar University, wrote: “It is very sad to convey that my most favourite Dr Mahabub Hossain died.”
Muhammad A (Rumee) Ali, a noted banker, wrote: “One of the sharpest minds I have come across in my life. It is sad that we are now deprived of this intellect that could have done so much more for Bangladesh. His contribution to Brac was phenomenal.”
Alice Laborte, a scientist at the IRRI, wrote: “I learned a lot from him [Mahabub] starting in the early 1990s when I was his research assistant and as his PhD thesis student 10 years later.”
“He mentored so many researchers like me and showed fatherly compassion to everyone in the Social Sciences Division at the IRRI which he led for 15 glorious years. I will remember our visits to farmers’ fields, his advice about my career and not forgetting my personal life, and his genuine interest in the welfare of rice farmers and the plight of the poor.”
Dr Mahabub was an inspiring figure who will always be remembered for his contribution to innovative, path breaking research in agricultural economics and rural development, said BIDS.
In a press release, Centre for Policy Dialogue said, “… he will be forever remembered for his brilliance in articulation of economic analysis, his path breaking research works, his leadership in agricultural innovation and above all his deep empathy for the marginalised people. This loss is irreplaceable.”

Noted economist Mahabub dead

A global epitome of development economics Dr Mahabub Hossain passed away on Monday (BDT 2.00 am) at a hospital in the United States.
He died at the age of 71 while undergoing treatment at Cleveland Clinic, New Jersey. The noted scholar left behind his wife, two daughters (Shaon and Sharmeen), a son ((Tapas) and many others to remember him.
According to family sources, his body will be brought to Bangladesh after tomorrow (Wednesday), and the date of his namaj-e-janaja (funeral) will be announced shortly.
The prominent economist was served as Director General of Bangladesh Institute of Development Studies (BIDS); Chief of the Social Sciences Division at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI), Los Banos, the Philippines; and Executive Director of BRAC. Dr Hossain was advisor to the BRAC executive director until his death. He was also a Distinguished Member of the CPD Board of Trustee.
Among others, President Md Abdul Hamid, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, BNP Chairperson Khaleda Zia, Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr Atiur Rahman and Nobel Laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus expressed deep shock at his death.
Dr Hossain was experiencing cardiovascular criticalities. In December 2015, doctors at Cleveland Clinic had to redo the open-heart bypass surgery (the earlier one done in Singapore which failed) to repair his two valves that got weakened during a cardiac arrest in July 2013.
Dr Hossain was born in January 2, 1945 in Nodia, West Bengal in a Muslim family that moved to the then East Pakistan in 1949.
He completed his BA (Hons) in Economics from Krishnanagar Govt College in Nodia, India, and MA in Economics from Dhaka University. He obtained PhD from Cambridge University, UK for his thesis ‘Agrarian Structure and Land Productivity’.
He started his profession as a staff economist at Pakistan Institute of Development Economics (PIDE). Some of his renowned research works are – Garib Deshe Garib Manush Bangladesh (poor people in a poor country Bangladesh), Asian Rice Bowls, A Returning Crisis, Rice Research in Asia: Progress and Prospects, Impact of Rice Research in Asia, Strategy of Development in Bangladesh, Rural Economy and Livelihoods Insights from Bangladesh and so on.
Economist Dr Uttom Kumar Debnath, also a co-author with Dr Hossain in many research articles, said: “He defied age all through his life. He was an inspiring figure, who will be remembered forever for his brilliance in articulation of economic analysis, groundbreaking research work, leadership in agricultural innovation, and above all for his deep empathy for the marginalized people. This loss is irreplaceable.”
BIDS, Bangladesh Economic Association, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD), Policy Research Institute (PRI), The Economic Research Group (ERG), BRAC, Bangladesh Agricultural Journalists Forum, Economic Reporters Forum and others mourn the death of Dr Hossain.
In condolence, the organisations said people will always remember him for his contribution to the field of agricultural policy and rural development in South, Southeast Asia and Africa.

চলে গেলেন কৃষি অর্থনীতি গবেষণার পথিকৃৎ মাহবুব হোসেন

অর্থনীতিবিদ মাহবুব হোসেন (৭১) আর নেই। বাংলাদেশ সময় গত রোববার দিবাগত রাত পৌনে তিনটায় যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ক্লেভেল্যান্ড ক্লিনিকে চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থায় মারা যান তিনি। রিডো বাইপাস সার্জারি ও ভাল্ভ পরিবর্তনের জন্য প্রায় এক মাস আগে সেখানে ভর্তি হন তিনি। চিকিৎসাধীন অবস্থাতেই মারা যান দেশের কৃষি ও খাদ্যনিরাপত্তা বিষয়ে দীর্ঘদিন ধরে গবেষণা করে যাওয়া এই অর্থনীতিবিদ।
মৃত্যুর আগে মাহবুব হোসেন ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অর্থনীতি ও সামাজিক বিজ্ঞান বিভাগের সভাপতি হিসেবে দায়িত্ব পালন করছিলেন। এর আগে তিনি ব্র্যাকের নির্বাহী পরিচালকের উপদেষ্টা, নির্বাহী পরিচালক, আন্তর্জাতিক ধান গবেষণা ইনস্টিটিউটের (ইরি) সামাজিক গবেষণা বিভাগের পরিচালক ও বাংলাদেশ উন্নয়ন গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠানের (বিআইডিএস) মহাপরিচালকের দায়িত্ব পালন করেন।
মাহবুব হোসেনের পারিবারিক সূত্রে জানা গেছে, আগামী বৃহস্পতিবার তাঁর মরদেহ দেশে আসার কথা রয়েছে। তবে তাঁকে ঢাকায় না তাঁর গ্রামের বাড়ি চুয়াডাঙ্গা জেলার দামুড়হুদা উপজেলার কাপাশডাঙ্গা গ্রামে কবর দেওয়া হবে, সেই সিদ্ধান্ত এখনো চূড়ান্ত হয়নি।
এ ব্যাপারে মাহবুব হোসেনের ছোট ভাই ইফতেখার হোসেন গতকাল প্রথম আলোকে বলেন, তাঁর মরদেহ বাংলাদেশে দ্রুত আনার ব্যাপারে চেষ্টা করা হচ্ছে। দেশে আনার পর তাঁর পরিবারের সঙ্গে কথা বলে সিদ্ধান্ত নেওয়া হবে কোথায় তাঁকে দাফন করা হবে।
মাহবুব হোসেন স্ত্রী পারভিন হোসেন, এক ছেলে ও দুই মেয়ে রেখে গেছেন। তাঁর ছেলে তানভীর হোসেন যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের ব্যাংক অব আমেরিকার ভাইস প্রেসিডেন্ট, বড় মেয়ে শাওন হোসেন বায়োটেকনোলজিস্ট ও ছোট মেয়ে শারমিন ব্র্যাক ইপিএলের পরিচালক হিসেবে কর্মরত।
বাবা ডা. কোবাদ আলী মালিতা ও মা ফাতেমা জোহরার ঘরে ১৯৪৫ সালে ভারতের নদীয়া জেলায় জন্ম নেন মাহবুব হোসেন। সেখান থেকে স্নাতক পাস করার পর ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অর্থনীতি বিভাগ থেকে স্নাতকোত্তর ও যুক্তরাজ্যের কেমব্রিজ বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে পিএইচডি ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন তিনি। পাঁচ ভাই ও ছয় বোনের মধ্যে মাহবুব হোসেন দ্বিতীয়।
২০১৪ থেকে ২০১৭ সাল পর্যন্ত এশিয়ান সোসাইটি ফর এগ্রিকালচার ইকোনমিস্ট-এর নির্বাচিত সভাপতি হয়েছিলেন অধ্যাপক মাহবুব হোসেন। এ ছাড়া তিনি বিশ্বব্যাংকের গ্লোবাল নলেজ অ্যাডভাইজরি কমিশনের সদস্য, বাংলাদেশ সেন্টার ফর পলিসি ডায়ালগের (সিপিডি) ট্রাস্টি বোর্ডের সদস্য এবং খাদ্যনিরাপত্তা-বিষয়ক বেশ কয়েকটি আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থার পরামর্শক হিসেবেও কাজ করেছেন।
১৯৯১ সালের প্রথম তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকার বাংলাদেশের উন্নয়ন-বিষয়ক যে টাস্কফোর্স গঠন করেছিল, মাহবুব হোসেন তার দারিদ্র্য বিমোচন-বিষয়ক কমিটির সভাপতি ছিলেন।
ফরেন পলিসি (এফটি) ২০১৩ সালে বিশ্বের ৫০০ জন প্রভাবশালী ব্যক্তির যে তালিকা প্রকাশ করে, তাতে মাহবুব হোসেনের নাম অন্তর্ভুক্ত হয়। বিশ্বের খাদ্যনিরাপত্তা এবং কৃষি উৎপাদন বিষয়ে অন্যতম প্রভাবশালী ব্যক্তি হিসেবে তাঁকে চিহ্নিত করে। খাদ্যনীতি-বিষয়ক আন্তর্জাতিক সংস্থা ইফপ্রি, ইরি, এফএও থেকে তাঁর গবেষণা প্রবন্ধ প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। এ পর্যন্ত তাঁর একক ও যৌথভাবে মোট ১২টি বই এবং ২০০ এর মতো প্রবন্ধ আন্তর্জাতিক জার্নালে প্রকাশিত হয়েছে।
বাংলাদেশের সবুজ বিপ্লবের প্রভাব, সেচপাম্পের মাধ্যমে কৃষি উৎপাদন বৃদ্ধি, গ্রামীণ অর্থনীতির পরিবর্তন নিয়ে একাধিক গবেষণাধর্মী বই এবং গবেষণা প্রবন্ধ লিখেছেন মাহবুব হোসেন। ১৯৭৩ সাল থেকে দেশের ৬৫টি গ্রামের পরিবর্তন বিষয়ে মাহবুব হোসেন একটি চলমান গবেষণার নেতৃত্ব দিচ্ছিলেন। বাংলাদেশ ও বিশ্বের চাল উৎপাদন এবং চালের অর্থনীতি নিয়ে তিনি নিয়মিত গবেষণা করছিলেন।
মাহবুব হোসেনের মৃত্যুতে ব্র্যাকের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও চেয়ারপারসন স্যার ফজলে হাসান আবেদ বলেন, ‘উন্নয়নসংক্রান্ত ইস্যুতে বিশ্বের যে মুষ্টিমেয় কয়েকজনের সুগভীর ধারণা ছিল, ড. মাহবুব হোসেন ছিলেন তাঁদের অন্যতম। সমস্ত প্রতিকূলতার বিরুদ্ধে তাঁর জীবনটাই ছিল এক সাফল্যগাথা।’
শান্তিতে নোবেল বিজয়ী অর্থনীতিবিদ, গ্রামীণ ব্যাংকের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ড. মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস বলেছেন, অর্থনীতি ও কৃষি গবেষণায় তাঁর অবদান ছিল মৌলিক ও সুদূরপ্রসারী। মাহবুব হোসেনের মৃত্যু শুধু দেশের জন্য নয়, বিশ্বের জন্য এবং কৃষি গবেষণাবিদদের জন্যও একটি অপূরণীয় ক্ষতি।
বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের গভর্নর আতিউর রহমান বলেছেন, কৃষি অর্থনীতির গবেষণায় মাহবুব হোসেন ছিলেন অদ্বিতীয়।
এ ছাড়া শোক প্রকাশ করেছেন বিশিষ্ট অর্থনীতিবিদ ওয়াহিদউদ্দিন মাহমুদ, সালেহউদ্দিন আহমেদ, হোসেন জিল্লুর রহমান, এস আর ওসমানী, রিজওয়ানুল ইসলাম, আতিকুর রহমান, সুলতান হাফিজ রহমান, বিনায়ক সেন, অশ্বিনী শেথ, অজিত ঘোষ, দেবপ্রিয় ভট্টাচার্য, মোস্তাফিজুর রহমান, জাফরুল্লাহ চৌধুরী, সৈয়দ হাশমী, শিরিন হক প্রমুখ।

ড. মাহবুব হোসেনের প্রয়াণ

বিশিষ্ট কৃষি অর্থনীতিবিদ ও ব্র্যাকের নির্বাহী পরিচালকের উপদেষ্টা ড. মাহবুব হোসেনের জীবনাবসান হয়েছে। তিনি ব্র্যাক বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের ইমেরিটাস অধ্যাপক হিসেবে কর্মরত ছিলেন। গতকাল রাত পৌনে ৩টায় (বাংলাদেশ সময়) যুক্তরাষ্ট্রের নিউ জার্সির ক্লিভল্যান্ড ক্লিনিকে চিকিত্সাধীন অবস্থায় তার মৃত্যু হয়। মৃত্যুকালে তার বয়স হয়েছিল ৭১ বছর। তিনি দীর্ঘদিন ধরে হূদরোগে ভুগছিলেন।
ড. মাহবুব হোসেন স্ত্রী, দুই মেয়ে, এক ছেলেসহ অসংখ্য গুণগ্রাহী রেখে গেছেন। তিনি ১৯৪৫ সালে ২ জানুয়ারি জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। জানা গেছে, যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে ড. মাহবুবের মরদেহ তিনদিনের মধ্যে দেশে আনতে পরিবারের পক্ষ থেকে পররাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়ের সঙ্গে আলোচনা সম্পন্ন করেছেন তার দুই ভাই। মরদেহ দেশের আনার পর তার সন্তান ও স্ত্রীর সঙ্গে আলোচনা করেই দাফনের স্থান চূড়ান্ত করা হবে বলে জানা গেছে। পরিবারের সদস্যরা জানিয়েছেন, ঢাকায় আনার পর সর্বসাধারণের শ্রদ্ধা নিবেদনের জন্য তার মরদেহ শহীদ মিনারে নেয়া হবে। এছাড়া রাজধানীতে একটি স্মরণসভাও করা হবে।
তার মৃত্যুতে ব্র্যাকের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা ও চেয়ারপারসন স্যার ফজলে হাসান আবেদ গভীর শোক প্রকাশ করে বলেন, ‘উন্নয়নসংক্রান্ত ইস্যুতে বিশ্বের যে মুষ্টিমেয় কয়েকজনের সুগভীর ধারণা ছিল, ড. মাহবুব হোসেন ছিলেন তাদের অন্যতম। সব প্রতিকূলতার বিরুদ্ধে তার জীবনটাই ছিল এক সাফল্যগাথা। ব্র্যাকে থাকাকালে দরিদ্র জনগোষ্ঠীর উন্নয়নে তিনি নিরলসভাবে কাজ করে গেছেন। গত কয়েক দশকে কৃষিতে প্রযুক্তিগত উন্নয়ন ও প্রান্তিক কৃষকদের জীবনমান উন্নয়নে তিনি নিবিড় গবেষণা করেছেন। এ অপূরণীয় ক্ষতির পর আমরা, তার ব্র্যাক পরিবারের সদস্যরা তার শোকসন্তপ্ত পরিবার-পরিজনের প্রতি গভীর সহমর্মিতা জ্ঞাপন করছি।’
এ বরেণ্য অর্থনীতিবিদের প্রয়াণে শোক জানিয়েছেন বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের গভর্নর ড. আতিউর রহমান। বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের সব কর্মকর্তা কর্মচারীর পক্ষ থেকে জানানো শোকবার্তায় ড. আতিউর বলেন, আমাদের প্রাণপ্রিয় মাহবুব ভাই অর্থনৈতিক গবেষণায় অসামান্য ধীশক্তির স্বাক্ষর রেখেছেন। বিশেষ করে বাংলাদেশের কৃষি অর্থনীতি গবেষণায় তিনি ছিলেন অদ্বিতীয়। তিনি বিআইডিএসে শুধু আমার একজন জ্যেষ্ঠ সহকর্মী ছিলেন না, তিনি ছিলেন আমার স্বদেশী উন্নয়ন গবেষণায় একান্ত বিজ্ঞ পরামর্শক। বর্গাচাষীদের জন্য ঋণ কর্মসূচিটি প্রণয়ন ও বাস্তবায়নের সঙ্গে তিনি সরাসরি জড়িত ছিলেন। গভর্নর তার শোকবার্তায় মরহুমের পরিবারের সদস্যদের প্রতি গভীর সমবেদনা প্রকাশ করেছেন।
ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য ড. আ আ ম স আরেফিন সিদ্দিক তার শোকবাণীতে বলেছেন, অধ্যাপক ড. মাহবুব হোসেন কৃষি অর্থনীতি-বিষয়ক গবেষণা ও কৃষির উন্নয়নে উদ্ভাবনী ভূমিকার জন্য সবার কাছে পরিচিত ছিলেন। উপাচার্য তার বাণীতে ড. মাহবুবের বিদেহী আত্মার মাগফিরাত কামনার পাশাপাশি তার পরিবারের সদস্যদের প্রতি গভীর সমবেদনা জ্ঞাপন করেন।
এছাড়া ড. মাহবুবের সাবেক কর্মস্থল বাংলাদেশ উন্নয়ন গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠানের পক্ষ থেকেও তার মৃত্যুতে গভীর শোক প্রকাশ করে বাণী দেয়া হয়েছে। এতে প্রতিষ্ঠানের হয়ে তার বিভিন্ন অবদান ও বাংলাদেশের দরিদ্র জনগোষ্ঠীর ক্ষমতায়নে বিশেষ ভূমিকার কথা স্মরণ করা হয়। সংস্থাটির মহাপরিচালক কে এ এস মুরশিদ শোকবাণীতে ড. মাহবুব হোসেনের অবদানকে শ্রদ্ধার সঙ্গে স্মরণ করেছেন।
ড. মাহবুব হোসেন ১৯৪৫ সালে ২ জানুয়ারি ভারতের নদিয়া জেলার অন্তর্ভুক্ত চাপড়া থানার বাঙ্গালজি গ্রামে জন্মগ্রহণ করেন। দেশভাগের পর তার পরিবার চুয়াডাঙ্গার দামুড়হুদা থানার বিষ্ণপুর গ্রামে চলে আসে। হাট চাপড়া কিং এডওয়ার্ড হাইস্কুল থেকে ১৯৬৩ সালে তিনি উচ্চ মাধ্যমিক পরীক্ষায় প্রথম শ্রেণীতে উত্তীর্ণ হয়ে ভর্তি হন কৃষ্ণনগর সরকারি মহাবিদ্যালয়ে। সেখান থেকেই অর্থনীতিতে অনার্সসহ বিএ কোর্স সম্পন্ন করে ১৯৬৬ সালে কলকাতা বিশ্ববিদ্যায়ের অর্থনীতি বিভাগের এমএ কোর্সে ভর্তি হন। পরে ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় থেকে অর্থনীতিতে এমএ ডিগ্রি অর্জন করেন। এরপর ক্যামব্রিজ ইউনিভার্সিটি থেকে পিএইচডি ডিগ্রি অর্জন করে ড. মাহবুব দারিদ্র্য, গ্রামীণ শিল্প, ক্ষুদ্রঋণ, কৃষি উন্নয়ন; বিশেষত কৃষিতে প্রযুক্তির উন্নয়ন নিয়ে গবেষণায় আত্মনিয়োগ করেন। এছাড়া তিনি বাংলাদেশের ভূমিস্বত্ব ব্যবস্থা ও ভূমি সংস্কার, অকৃষিজ খাতের উন্নয়ন, কৃষিতে ভর্তুকি ও মূল্যনীতি, গ্রামীণ উন্নয়নে রাস্তাঘাট ও অন্যান্য ভৌতিক অবকাঠামোর অবদান এবং দারিদ্র্য বিমোচনে ক্ষুদ্রঋণের ভূমিকা ও গ্রামীণ ব্যাংকের অবদান নিয়ে তিনি বিস্তৃত গবেষণা করেছেন। তার এ পর্যন্ত ১৫টি বই ও ১৪০টি গবেষণা নিবন্ধ প্রকাশিত হয়েছে। এর মধ্যে রয়েছে— গরিব দেশে গরিব মানুষ বাংলাদেশ, গ্রামের মানুষ গ্রামীণ অর্থনীতি জীবন জীবিকার পর্যালোচনা; বাংলাদেশের পল্লী উন্নয়ন: সমস্যা ও সম্ভাবনা ও গল্পে গল্পে অর্থনীতি; বিশ গেরামের গল্প। যুক্তরাষ্ট্র থেকে প্রকাশিত রাজনীতি ও অর্থনীতি-বিষয়ক গ্লোবাল ম্যাগাজিন ‘ফরেইন পলিসি’ কর্তৃক বিশ্বের সবচেয়ে প্রভাবশালী ৫০০ ব্যক্তির তালিকায় ২০১৩ সালে তিনি বাংলাদেশ থেকে প্রথমবারের মতো নির্বাচিত হন।
ড. মাহবুবের কর্মজীবন শুরু হয় পাকিস্তান ইনস্টিটিউট ও ডেভেলপমেন্ট ইকোনমিকসে (পিআইডিই)। এমএ ফাইনালের পরীক্ষাকালীন ড. হোসেনকে পিআইডিআইয়ের তত্কালীন পরিচালক অধ্যাপক নুরুল ইসলাম তার প্রতিষ্ঠানে স্টাফ ইকোনমিস্ট পদে যোগদানের প্রস্তাব দেন। ১৯৭০ সালের ডিসেম্বরে প্রতিষ্ঠানটি ঢাকায় স্থানান্তরিত হয়। পরবর্তী সময়ে এর নামকরণ করা হয় ‘বাংলাদেশ উন্নয়ন গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠান’ সংক্ষেপে বিআইডিএস। বিআইডিএস বোর্ড অব ট্রাস্টিজ ১৯৮৮ সালে ড. মাহবুবকে মহাপরিচালক হিসেবে নিয়োগ দেয়। এখানে থাকা অবস্থায় ম্যানিলায় অবস্থিত আন্তর্জাতিক ধান গবেষণা প্রতিষ্ঠানের (ইরি) জন্য গ্রামীণ উন্নয়নে আধুনিক কৃষি প্রযুক্তির অবদানের ওপর একটি গবেষণা কাজে হাত দেন তিনি। এরপর ইরিতে ১৯৯০ সালে সমাজবিজ্ঞান বিভাগের প্রধান হিসেবে দায়িত্ব নেন। এ সময় থেকে ২০০৭ সাল পর্যন্ত দায়িত্ব পালনরত অবস্থায় তিনি প্রতিষ্ঠানটির উপ-মহাপরিচালকের দায়িত্বে নিয়োজিত ছিলেন। এছাড়া তিনি ১৯৯৪ থেকে ২০০৭ সাল পর্যন্ত ইউনিভার্সিটি অব ফিলিপিন্স লস ব্যানস (টচখই) ক্যাম্পাসে কৃষি অর্থনীতি বিভাগে এফিলিয়েট প্রফেসর হিসেবে শিক্ষকতা করেন। তবে ইরি থেকে আগাম অবসর নিয়ে তিনি ২০০৭ সালের জুনে দেশে ফিরে ব্র্যাকের নির্বাহী পরিচালকের দায়িত্ব নেন। পরে ২০১৩ সালে নির্বাহী পরিচালকের দায়িত্ব ছেড়ে তিনি প্রতিষ্ঠানটির নির্বাহী পরিচালকের উপদেষ্টার দায়িত্ব গ্রহণ করেন। এছাড়া গত বছর দুই বছরের জন্য এশিয়ান সোসাইটি অব এগ্রিকালচারাল ইকোনমিস্টের সভাপতি নির্বাচিত হন তিনি। মৃত্যুর আগ পর্যন্ত তিনি ব্র্যাক ইউনিভার্সিটির ডিপার্টমেন্ট অব ইকোনমিকস অ্যান্ড সোস্যাল সায়েন্সের চেয়ারপারসন হিসেবে কর্মরত ছিলেন।
ড. মাহবুবের মৃত্যুতে পরিকল্পনামন্ত্রী আ হ ম মুস্তফা কামালের পাঠানো এক শোকবার্তায় বলা হয়েছে, কৃষি অর্থনীতি-বিষয়ক গবেষণা, লেখালেখি ও কৃষির উন্নয়নে উদ্ভাবনী ভূমিকার জন্য মাহবুব হোসেনের অবদান চির অম্লান হয়ে থাকবে। তার মৃত্যুতে যে শূন্যতার সৃষ্টি হয়েছে তা পূরণ হওয়ার নয়।
এছাড়া প্রথিতযশা এ অর্থনীতিবিদের মৃত্যুতে দেশের বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রে অবদান রাখা প্রখ্যাত ব্যক্তিরা শোক জানিয়েছেন। স্বনামধন্য কয়েকজন বুদ্ধিজীবী এক যৌথ শোকবার্তায় ড. মাহবুবকে দক্ষিণ ও দক্ষিণ-পূর্ব এশিয়ার নেতৃস্থানীয় অর্থনীতিবিদ হিসেবে উল্লেখ করেছেন। অসুস্থ অবস্থায়ও তার কাজের প্রতি নিবেদনের কথা উল্লেখ করে শোকবার্তায় বলা হয়, প্রান্তিক জনগোষ্ঠীর উন্নয়ন, ক্ষুদ্রঋণ, কৃষিজ অবকাঠামো-বিষয়ক বহুবিধ অবদানের জন্য তাকে জাতি সবসময় মনে রাখবে। যৌথ এ শোকবার্তায় স্বাক্ষর করেছেন, সাবেক তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের উপদেষ্টা ওয়াহিদউদ্দিন মাহমুদ, বাংলাদেশ ব্যাংকের সাবেক গভর্নর ড. সালেহউদ্দিন আহমেদ, পিপিআরসির নির্বাহী চেয়ারম্যান হোসেন জিল্লুর রহমান, আলস্টার ইউনিভার্সিটির অর্থনীতির অধ্যাপক এসআর ওসমানি, আইএলওর এমপ্লয়মেন্ট সেক্টরের সাবেক বিশেষ উপদেষ্টা রিজওয়ানুল ইসলাম, ইফাদের আতিকুর রহমান, ব্র্যাক ইউনিভার্সিটির বিআইজিডির নির্বাহী পরিচালক সুলতান হাফিজ রহমান, ইনস্টিটিউট অব সোস্যাল স্টাডিজের ইমেরিটাস প্রফেসর অসওয়ানি শেঠ, ব্র্যাক ইউনিভার্সিটির অর্থনীতি বিভাগের সাবেক চেয়ারম্যান সৈয়দ হাশেমী, আইএলওর সাবেক কর্মকর্তা অজিত ঘোষ, সিপিডির সম্মানিত ফেলো দেবপ্রিয় ভট্টাচার্য, সিপিডির নির্বাহী পরিচালক মোস্তাফিজুর রহমান, বিআইডিএসের গবেষণা পরিচালক বিনায়ক সেন, গণস্বাস্থ্য কেন্দ্রের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা জাফরউল্লাহ চৌধুরী, নারীপক্ষের শিরিন হক প্রমুখ।
