Rotary Club honours a sage

Prof Rehman Sobhan was accorded the prestigious “Rotary SEED Award 2014” last night for his contribution to education and economic development through economic and policy research.
The Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka Foundation bestowed the accolade on the renowned economist of the country at a function at a city hotel. The award carries a gold medal, a cheque worth Tk 2 lakh and a citation.
Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury presented the medal.
The annual award is presented every year to a living citizen of Bangladesh for outstanding and original contributions to the fields of science, education and economic development, which abbreviates to SEED.
Chairman of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, Prof Rehman is the 17th recipient of the award since its introduction in 1995.
The previous recipients include Nobel Laureate Prof Muhammad Yunus, Prof M Safiullah, founder of Institute of Business Administration, Dhaka University; Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, founder of Brac; and Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed, founder of Bishwo Shahitto Kendro.
Receiving the award, Prof Rehman said he acknowledged his appreciation for the Rotary community for recognising him for his contribution in the search for knowledge with its focus on what he deemed was his life’s work to seek the correction of injustice as a part to end poverty in Bangladesh and around the region.
“It is appropriate in some ways that what little work I have done is not unrelated to the mission of the Rotary movement which basically brings together a community of well-established professionals and people from the business community to contribute from their resources and life’s achievements which will in fact improve the condition of lives of those less privileged,” he said.
Sir Fazle Hasan Abed, Prof Abdullah Abu Sayeed, Rtn Safina Rahman, District Governor, RI District 3281 Bangladesh; Ferdous Ahmed, Outgoing President, Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka; and Rtn Forkan Bin Quasem, Incoming Club President, Rotary Club of Metropolitan Dhaka, were among the distinguished guests present at the function.

সমাজের কাঠামোগত সমস্যা হলো দারিদ্র্য

বাংলাদেশের দারিদ্র্য পরিস্থিতিকে সমাজের কাঠামোগত সমস্যা হিসেবে অভিহিত করেছেন বিশিষ্ট অর্থনীতিবিদ ও সেন্টার ফর পলিসি ডায়ালগের (সিপিডি) চেয়ারম্যান অধ্যাপক রেহমান সোবহান। এ সমস্যার প্রধান কারণ হিসেবে তিনি দেশের সাধারণ মানুষের সম্পদ, শিক্ষা ও বাজারসুবিধার প্রাপ্যতা না থাকাকে দায়ী করেছেন।
রাজধানীর একটি হোটেলে গতকাল সোমবার রাতে রোটারি ক্লাব অব মেট্রোপলিটন ঢাকা আয়োজিত এক অনুষ্ঠানে তিনি এসব কথা বলেন। এ অনুষ্ঠানে রেহমান সোবহানকে ১৭তম রোটারি সিড অ্যাওয়ার্ড প্রদানের মাধ্যমে সংবর্ধনা জানানো হয়। পাশাপাশি ক্লাবের নতুন কমিটির অভিষেকও হয়। এতে প্রধান অতিথি ছিলেন জাতীয় সংসদের স্পিকার শিরীন শারমিন চৌধুরী।
অনুষ্ঠানে রেহমান সোবহান বলেন, দেশের বেশির ভাগ মানুষ মানসম্মত শিক্ষার সুযোগ পায় না। আবার তারা সম্পদ থেকেও বঞ্চিত। পাশাপাশি বাজারের মাধ্যমে যে সুবিধা পাওয়ার কথা ছিল, সেটাও তারা পাচ্ছে না। এসব বঞ্চনা সমাজের দারিদ্র্যকে বজায় রেখেছে ও বৈষম্য বাড়াচ্ছে।
দারিদ্র্য নিরসনে কাজ করার জন্য রেহমান সোবহান নোবেল বিজয়ী অর্থনীতিবিদ ও গ্রামীণ ব্যাংকের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা মুহাম্মদ ইউনূস এবং ব্র্যাকের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা চেয়ারম্যান ফজলে হাসান আবেদের প্রশংসা করেন। তিনি বলেন, পিছিয়ে পড়া জনগোষ্ঠীর জীবনমান উন্নয়নে এ দুজন নিরন্তর কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন। এখন সমাজের অন্যান্য ব্যক্তি ও প্রতিষ্ঠানেরও দায়িত্ব আছে পিছিয়ে পড়া গরিব মানুষের জীবনমানের উন্নতি ঘটানোর।
প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে স্পিকার শিরীন শারমিন চৌধুরী বলেন, মানব উন্নয়নে রোটারিয়ানরা যেভাবে স্বেচ্ছাশ্রমে কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন, তা কোনো মূল্য দিয়ে পরিশোধ করা সম্ভব নয়। তাদের কাজ টেকসই উন্নয়নের ভূমিকা রাখছে, যা গণতন্ত্র সুসংহত করার জন্য সহায়ক হয়।
অনুষ্ঠানে ফজলে হাসান আবেদ, শিক্ষাবিদ অধ্যাপক আবদুল্লাহ আবু সায়ীদ, রোটারি ক্লাব অব ঢাকা মেট্রোপলিটনের নতুন সভাপতি ফোরকান বিন কাশেম, সদ্য সাবেক সভাপতি ফেরদৌস আহমেদ, সহসভাপতি নাজনীন সিদ্দিক প্রমুখ উপস্থিত ছিলেন।
পরে ক্লাবের নতুন কমিটির ২০১৪-১৫ কার্যবছরের অভিষেকের আনুষ্ঠানিকতা সম্পন্ন করা হয়। এটি ছিল ৩২তম অভিষেক।
