Empower grassroots women

Despite achieving success, women in Bangladesh still face many hurdles to flourish in their careers and reaching goals, said discussants yesterday.
If women can be provided with equal opportunities and familial support, they will be able to contribute more towards the country’s economic advancement, they viewed.
They were speaking at the inaugural ceremony of a painting exhibition titled, “HerStory: Women Trailblazers” and a discussion, “Transforming Visions: Women, Work and Leadership”, organised by Energis Limited at the capital’s MIDAS Centre to celebrate International Women’s Day 2017.
Economic self-reliance is one of the key tools for protecting the rights of women, said Tarana Halim, state minister for posts and telecommunications. If a woman can attain that, she can achieve courage to fight for her rights.
She said the media reports on women repression, but they should also publish an equal number of reports on the success of women.
Rokia Afzal Rahman, former adviser to a caretaker government, said women in Bangladesh have the abilities and merits to secure a better career and contribute to the society.
“We want women, especially the youth, to go forward with their competency and skills,” she viewed.
Education is a key component to overcome discrimination and injustice, said rights activist Aroma Dutta.
Nishat Majumder, the first Bangladeshi woman to scale Mount Everest, emphasised engaging young girls with extracurricular and outdoor activities for improving their mental and physical strength.
Dr Fahmida Khatun, executive director of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, said women’s contributions to agriculture, other informal sectors and households should be recognised.
Women must have the confidence to prove their skills and competencies to overcome all the hurdles for reaching their goals, said Rupali Chowdhury, managing director of Berger Paints Bangladesh Limited.
Suraiya Zannath, lead financial management specialist of The World Bank, said a social movement to remove the barriers to women empowerment in the country is a must.
Zareen Mahmud Hosein, director of Energis Limited, said women should be empowered at grassroots level because rural women are more vulnerable to repression.
Over a dozen of leading women professionals spoke at the event, attended by several hundreds of women.
In the exhibition, paintings of 19 artists were displayed. The paintings focused on visions and thoughts of women trailblazers including Begum Rokeya Sakhawat, Jahanara Imam, Nilima Ibrahim and Begum Sufia Kamal.

Women drivers to be recruited for the postal service

The junior minister’s remarks came at “HerStory: Women Trailblazers” exhibition, organised by Energies Group, at Dhaka’s EMK Centre. The exhibhition is organised to mark International Women’s Day
Bangladesh postal service will soon get women drivers during the next recruitment cycle, according to the State Minister for Posts and Telecommunications Tarana Halim.
The state minister said they will fill 20% of the driving posts with women at “HerStory: Women Trailblazers” exhibition held at the EMK Centre on Saturday.
During the inauguration of the exhibition dedicated to a hundred years of female leadership in Bangladesh, Tarana said: “Women are efficient making them safer drivers and less accident prone. They will help make the roads safer for everyone.”
Energies Group, in collaboration with EMK Centre organised the exhibition to mark International Women’s Day. The framework of the exhibition is a timeline of outstanding women who made lasting contributions in the fields of science, politics, economics, arts and letters.
Panelists at the discussion said women empowerment is the reflection of gender equality that acts as a precursor to advancing a country’s development such as – moving the country towards attaining middle income status and also inclusive and sustainable development of Bangladesh.
They emphasised the importance of a society that ensures equal opportunity and fundamental right for everyone.
Pointing out the lack of women role models in certain professions, prominent artist Kanak Chapa said: “Professions like that of artists, police officers, pilots and most scientific fields lack women role models that aspiring girls can look up to, which is why we need to work harder to break those barriers.”
However, there are certain professions where the labour force was almost equal between men and women, according to Lead Financial Management Specialist at World Bank Suraiya Zannath: “The recent labour force study found women constitute a major percentage in the manufacturing sector, almost equal to men. Health and education also have the second largest participation of women. In agriculture 50% of the labour force is women.”
The exhibition features works by Bibasha Hayat, Dilara Begum Jolly, Fareha Zeba, Joya Shahrin Huq, Kanak Chapa Chakma, Kazi Istela Imam, Saiq’a S Chowdhury, Najmun Nahar Keya, Nayma Haque, Nazlee Laila Mansur, Reetu Sattar, Rokeya Sultana, Salma Abedin Prithi, Saria Saguaro, Tabassum Salma Islam and Yasmeen Jahan Nupur and will be open to the public till March 31 from 9:30am to 8pm at EMK Centre.

‘হার স্টোরি’ শীর্ষক অনুষ্ঠানে সফল নারীদের পরামর্শ
পরিশ্রমের পাশাপাশি নারীদের দক্ষতা অর্জন করতে হবে
বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রের সফল নারীরা বললেন, সংখ্যাগতভাবে দেশের নারীরা এগিয়েছেন বটে, তবে নেতৃত্বের জায়গায় এখনো পিছিয়ে। সেটা অর্জন করতে হলে নারীদের কঠোর পরিশ্রমের পাশাপাশি দক্ষতা ও যোগ্যতা অর্জন করতে হবে। এরপরও প্রতিষ্ঠান মূল্যায়ন না করলে প্রতিবাদ করতে হবে।
গতকাল শনিবার রাজধানীর ধানমন্ডিতে মাইডাস কনভেনশন সেন্টারে ‘হার স্টোরি’ শীর্ষক এক অনুষ্ঠানে একত্র হওয়া বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রের সফল নারীরা এ কথাই বললেন তরুণ প্রজন্মের নারীদের উদ্দেশে।
এনার্জিস লিমিটেডের উদ্যোগে আন্তর্জাতিক নারী দিবস উপলক্ষে আয়োজিত এ অনুষ্ঠানের মূল উদ্দেশ্য ছিল দেশের উন্নয়নে নারীর বহুমুখী অংশগ্রহণের চিত্র তুলে ধরা।
‘দৃষ্টিভঙ্গির রূপান্তর: নারী, কর্ম ও নেতৃত্ব’ শীর্ষক প্যানেল আলোচনার প্রধান অতিথি ডাক ও টেলিযোগাযোগ প্রতিমন্ত্রী তারানা হালিম বলেন, রাজনীতিতে নারীদের প্রতিষ্ঠিত হতে বেশির ভাগের ক্ষেত্রে বড় বাধা ‘ম্যান, মাসল, মানি’।
তারানা হালিম বলেন, ‘অনেকে ধরেই নেয় যে নারীরা টেকনিক্যাল বিষয় বুঝবে না। আমি দায়িত্ব পাওয়ার পর নিজেকে প্রস্তুত করতে ১৫ দিন সময় নিই। তারপর যখন মন্ত্রণালয়ের অন্যদের প্রশ্ন করি, তখন তাঁরা আমার কথা শোনা শুরু করেন। পুরুষশাসিত সমাজে নারীকে আলাদাভাবে দক্ষতার প্রমাণ দিতে হয়।’
এ আলোচনায় আলোচক ছিলেন বিশ্বব্যাংকের জ্যেষ্ঠ আর্থিক ব্যবস্থাপনা বিশেষজ্ঞ সুরাইয়া জান্নাত, চিত্রশিল্পী কনকচাঁপা চাকমা, আন্তর্জাতিক উদরাময় গবেষণা কেন্দ্র, বাংলাদেশের ইমেরিটাস গবেষক ফিরদউসী কাদরি, বার্জার পেইন্টস বাংলাদেশ লিমিটেডের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক রুপালি চৌধুরী।
অনুষ্ঠানে সঞ্চালকের দায়িত্ব পালন করেন সেন্টার ফর পলিসি ডায়ালগের নির্বাহী পরিচালক ফাহমিদা খাতুন। তিনি নারীর গৃহশ্রমের মূল্যায়নের বিষয়টিতে গুরুত্ব দেন। নারীরা যাতে বাইরের কাজে দক্ষতা দেখাতে পারেন, সে জন্য শিশু দিবাযত্নকেন্দ্র তৈরিসহ নারীবান্ধব নীতি ও আইন করার বিষয়টিতে গুরুত্ব দেন আলোচকেরা।
নারীদের এগিয়ে যাওয়ার পথে যে প্রতিবন্ধকতা আছে, তা মোকাবিলায় করণীয় তুলে ধরেন ঢাকা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের চারুকলা বিভাগের সহকারী অধ্যাপক জয়া শাহরীন হক, প্রথম এভারেস্টজয়ী নারী নিশাত মজুমদার, ব্র্যাকের (হিউম্যান রাইটস অ্যান্ড লিগ্যাল এইড সার্ভিসেস) প্রোগ্রাম প্রধান সাজেদা ফারসিয়া কবির, সহজ ডটকমের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা মালিহা মালেক কাদির।
মাইডাস সেন্টারে এ অনুষ্ঠানের অংশ হিসেবে বর্তমান সময়ের স্বনামধন্য ১৯ জন নারী চিত্রশিল্পীর বিগত শতকের নারীনেত্রীদের জীবন ও কর্মের ভাবধারায় আঁকা ‘হার স্টোরি: উইমেন ট্রেইলব্লেজারস’ শীর্ষক চিত্র প্রদর্শনী শুরু হয়েছে।
অনুষ্ঠানের শেষ পর্যায়ে এই ১৯ শিল্পীর সঙ্গে মঞ্চে ডাকা হয় বিভিন্ন ক্ষেত্রের সফল নারীদের। মালেকা খান, রওনক জাহান, জেবা রশীদ চৌধুরী, সালমা খান, জওশন আরা রহমান, পারভীন হাসান, নাজমুন নেসা মাহতাব, অ্যারমা দত্ত, কামরুন নাহার জাফর, অ্যাঞ্জেলা গোমেজ, পারভীন মাহমুদ, জেরীন মাহমুদ হোসাইন প্রমুখ মঞ্চে ওঠেন। অতিথিদের উত্তরীয় পরিয়ে সম্মাননা জানানো হয়। আমেরিকান সেন্টারের পরিচালক এন ম্যাককোনেল, চিত্র প্রদর্শনীর কিউরেটর ক্যাটেরিনা ডন সংক্ষিপ্ত বক্তব্য দেন।
অনুষ্ঠানে সবাইকে ধন্যবাদ জানান মাইডাস ফিন্যান্সিং লিমিটেডের প্রতিষ্ঠাতা এবং সাবেক তত্ত্বাবধায়ক সরকারের উপদেষ্টা রোকিয়া আফজাল রহমান। সকাল থেকে দুপুর পর্যন্ত অনুষ্ঠানে হামিদা হোসেন, নিলুফার মঞ্জুর, নাসিম ফেরেদৌস, মেহতাব খানমসহ সফল নারীদের পদচারণায় মিলনায়তন ঝলমল করতে থাকে।
জলের গানের পরিবেশনার মধ্য দিয়ে অনুষ্ঠানের সমাপ্তি ঘটে।
মাইডাস সেন্টারে শুরু হওয়া চিত্রপ্রদর্শনীটি ৩০ মার্চ পর্যন্ত (শুক্রবার ছাড়া) সকাল ৯টা থেকে রাত ৮টা পর্যন্ত চলবে।
