Golden jubilee of CU Economics department celebrated

“Most renowned educational institutions are in Dhaka and Chittagong, but the light of education should be extended to everyone,” said eminent economist Professor Rehman Sobhan. He also suggested a halt be put to the primary and secondary level school dropout rate.
“We have to ensure the four principles of the 1972 constitution to implement the ideology of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, which will ensure economic emancipation,” he said.
Professor Sobhan made the remarks as the golden jubilee speaker at a programme organised by the Chittagong University (CU) Economics Department, which is celebrating 50 years of its history at CU.
The golden jubilee programme was held at the field of the Abur Rahman dormitory on campus.
CU Economics Department chairman Professor Abul Hossain presided, and CU Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr Iftekhar Uddin Chowhdury was also present. However, former teacher and Noble Laureate Professor Dr Muhammed Yunus did not attend the jubilee, said campus sources.
Later in the programme, the VC of CU handed out a crest to Rehman Soban.
Terming student life as the most time for a person, Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Mayor Annisul Huq also spoke at the jubilee. He urged Chittagong University (CU) students to make the best use of their student life to fulfill their destiny.
Recalling his own student life, the DNCC mayor, a former student of the CU Economics department, said: “I am in the 7th batch of students of the department. Though I left the department many years ago, I am still in contact with my honourable teachers Moinul Islam and Sekander Khan. Apart from them, I am also in contact with Professor Dr Mohammed Yunus who taught me.”

‘সমৃদ্ধির জন্য বাহাত্তরের সংবিধানে ফিরে যেতে হবে’

বাংলাদেশের অর্থনৈতিক ও সামাজিক সমৃদ্ধির জন্য ১৯৭২ সালে প্রণীত সংবিধানে ফিরে যেতে হবে বলে মন্তব্য করেছেন বিশিষ্ট অর্থনীতিবিদ ও সেন্টার ফর পলিসি ডায়ালগের (সিপিডি) চেয়ারম্যান ড. রেহমান সোবহান।
শনিবার চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অর্থনীতি বিভাগ প্রতিষ্ঠার ৫০ বছর পূর্তি উপলক্ষে আয়োজিত অনুষ্ঠানে এ মন্তব্য করেন তিনি।
রেহমান সোবহান বলেন, ‘বঙ্গবন্ধুর লালিত স্বপ্ন বাস্তবায়ন করতে হলে বাহাত্তরের সংবিধানের চার মূলনীতি নিশ্চিত করতে হবে। এতে দেশের অর্থনৈতিক মুক্তি আসবে এবং গড়ে উঠবে সামাজিক সমৃদ্ধি।’
বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের সমাজবিজ্ঞান অনুষদের ডিন ও অর্থনীতি বিভাগের সভাপতি অধ্যাপক ড. আবুল হোসেনের সভাপতিত্বে অনুষ্ঠানে বক্তব্য রাখেন বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য অধ্যাপক ড. ইফতেখার উদ্দীন চৌধুরী, অধ্যাপক ড. আব্দুল মান্নান, সোনালী ব্যাংক লিমিটেডের চেয়ারম্যান ফজলে কবির, কুমিল্লা বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের উপাচার্য আলী আশরাফ, ইস্ট ডেল্টা ইউনিভার্সিটির উপাচার্য মো. সিকান্দার খান, অর্থনীতি বিভাগের অধ্যাপক নিতাই ভট্টাচার্য, অধ্যাপক জ্যোতি প্রকাশ দত্ত, ইউনাইটেড কমার্শিয়াল ব্যাংকের ব্যবস্থাপনা পরিচালক মো. আলী, ঢাকা উত্তর সিটি কর্পোরেশনের মেয়র আনিসুল হকসহ প্রমুখ।
চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয়ের অর্থনীতি বিভাগের সাবেক শিক্ষার্থী মেয়র আনিসুল হক শিক্ষার্থীদের উদ্দেশ্যে বলেন, ‘নিজের স্বপ্নের সাথে বাবা মায়ের স্বপ্নকে মেলাও। স্বপ্ন দেখো বড়লোক হওয়ার জন্য নয়, সফল হওয়ার জন্য। মধ্যবিত্ত পরিবার থেকে উঠে এসে আমি যদি মেয়র হতে পারি তবে তোমরা কেন পারবে না?’
সুবর্ণজয়ন্তী অনুষ্ঠানে অর্থনীতি বিভাগের সাবেক প্রায় তিন হাজার শিক্ষার্থী অংশ নেন।

চার মূলনীতি বাস্তবায়ন করতে হবে

অর্থনীতিবিদ ড. রেহমান সোবহান বলেছেন, বাংলাদেশের অর্থনৈতিক ও সামাজিক সমৃদ্ধি নিশ্চিত করতে ১৯৭২ সালের সংবিধানের চার মূলনীতি বাস্তবায়ন করতে হবে। তিনি গতকাল দুপুরে চট্টগ্রাম বিশ্ববিদ্যালয় অর্থনীতি বিভাগের ৫০ বছরপূর্তি অনুষ্ঠানে প্রধান অতিথির বক্তব্যে এ কথা বলেন।
অনুষ্ঠানে ড. সোবহান আরও বলেন, সুখী-সমৃদ্ধ দেশ ও জাতি গঠনে? নতুন প্রজন্মকে অধিকতর দায়িত্বশীল হতে হবে। বাংলাদেশ মানবসম্পদ উন্নয়নে অনেক অগ্রসর হয়েছে। কিন্তু এখনো কিছু চ্যালেঞ্জ রয়ে গেছে। গণতান্ত্রিক পদ্ধতিতে সব মানুষের সমান সুযোগ নিশ্চিত করতে হবে। এতে দেশের অর্থনৈতিক মুক্তি আসবে এবং গড়ে উঠবে সামাজিক সমৃদ্ধি। এ অনুষ্ঠানে বিশেষ অতিথির বক্তব্যে ঢাকা উত্তরের মেয়র আনিসুল হক বলেন, দায়িত্ব নেওয়ার পর প্রায় ২০ হাজার অবৈধ বিলবোর্ড উচ্ছেদ করেছি। প্রতিটি বিলবোর্ডের পেছনে তিনজন মাস্তান থাকলে আমার এখন শত্রুর সংখ্যা ৬০ হাজার। শিক্ষার্থীদের উদ্দেশে তিনি বলেন, জীবনে হয়তো অনেক কিছু হবে, অনেক কিছু পাব, তবে আর কখনো আমার ছাত্র হয়ে ওঠা হবে না।
