ERF celebrates gala night
Eight journalists, one economist awarded

The Economic Reporters’ Forum yesterday honoured eight journalists for their excellence in business journalism and one economist for his service to the country’s economy.
Monzur Ahmed of Bangla-language daily Prothom Alo and Obaidullah Rony of Samakal jointly won the Best Economic Reporting award in the banking category.
Fakhrul Islam Harun and Sujoy Mohajan, both from Prothom Alo, won the accolade in the consumer rights and capital market categories respectively.
Sohel Parvez, a senior reporter of The Daily Star, was awarded for his reporting on the macro-economy, while Alamgir Hossain of Jamuna Television won the award in the TV reporting category.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith handed the awards at the ERF Awards Night at the capital’s Sonargaon Hotel.
Shamsul Huq Zahid, joint editor of The Financial Express, and Shahiduzzaman, editor of the News Network, were given the gratitude award for their contribution in establishing the association. Prof Wahiduddin Mahmud, a noted economist of the country, was given the lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the economy.
Speaking as the chief guest, Muhith said he is proud of being a part of the current pace of economic growth, and thanked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for giving him the opportunity at the twilight of his life.
“I am very lucky. I used to dream that the country will march ahead. Today, Bangladesh is no longer a basket case.”
Prof Rehman Sobhan, a noted economist, called upon the finance minister to make a budgetary allocation in order to promote investigative journalism in the country. Sobhan, the chairman of the Centre for Policy Dialogue, also urged reporters to work hard to get information and practise journalism without fear or favour.
ERF President Sultan Mahmud and General Secretary Sajjadur Rahman also spoke.

ERF honours journalists for best reporting

The Economic Reporters’ Forum (ERF) yesterday awarded six economic reporters for their best business reporting.
The awards were given in four categories.
Monzur Ahmed of the daily Prothom Alo and Obaidullah Rony of the Daily Samakal jointly bagged the award in the banking category.
Fakhrul Islam and Sujoy Mohajan, both from the Prothom Alo, got the award in consumer rights and capital market category respectively.
Under macroeconomic category, Sohel Parvez of The Daily Star, received award while Alamgir
Hossain of Jamuna Television won the award under TV reporting category.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith handed the awards at a ceremony titled ERF Nights held at the Sonargaon hotel in the city.
Shamsul Huq Zahid, deputy editor of The Financial Express and Shahiduzzaman, editor of the News Network were given the gratitude awards for their contributions in founding the ERF.
Wahiduddin Mahmud, a noted economist of the country, was awarded the lifetime achievement award for his contribution to the economy.
Addressing the ceremony, Finance Minister said: “I feel proud of being a part of the current pace of the economic development in Bangladesh and would like to thank Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina for giving me the opportunity at the fag end of my life.”

Rehman Sobhan, a prominent economist, urged the finance minister to create budgetary resources to encourage investigative reporting in the country.
He also called upon the government to make all the projects related information, its progress and escalating costs available by putting on the website.

আজীবন সম্মাননা পেলেন অর্থনীতিবিদ ওয়াহিদউদ্দিন মাহমুদ
ছয় সাংবাদিক পেলেন ইআরএফ পুরস্কার
অর্থনীতি-বিষয়ক সাংবাদিকদের সংগঠন ইকোনমিক রিপোর্টার্স ফোরামের (ইআরএফ) সেরা রিপোর্টিং পুরস্কার, ২০১৬ পেলেন ছয় সাংবাদিক।
রাজধানীর একটি হোটেলে গতকাল শনিবার প্রধান অতিথি হিসেবে অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল মাল আবদুল মুহিত সাংবাদিকদের হাতে পুরস্কার তুলে দেন। অনুষ্ঠানে বিশেষ অতিথি ছিলেন অর্থনীতিবিদ রেহমান সোবহান।
ব্যাংক, বিমা ও আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠান শ্রেণিতে পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন যৌথভাবে প্রথম আলোর বিশেষ প্রতিনিধি (বর্তমানে রংধনু টিভি চ্যানেলে কর্মরত) মনজুর আহমেদ ও সমকাল-এর নিজস্ব প্রতিবেদক ওবায়দুল্লাহ রনি। এ ছাড়া পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন সামষ্টিক অর্থনীতি শ্রেণিতে ডেইলি স্টার-এর জ্যেষ্ঠ প্রতিবেদক সোহেল পারভেজ, ভোক্তা অধিকার ও আর্থিক দুর্নীতি শ্রেণিতে প্রথম আলোর জ্যেষ্ঠ প্রতিবেদক ফখর্ুল ইসলাম এবং পুঁজিবাজার শ্রেণিতে প্রথম আলোর উপ-বাণিজ্য সম্পাদক সুজয় মহাজন।
ইলেকট্রনিক মিডিয়ায় সামগ্রিক অর্থনীতি শ্রেণিতে পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন যমুনা টিভির জ্যেষ্ঠ প্রতিবেদক আলমগীর হোসেন। ইআরএফের সভাপতি সুলতান মাহমুদ অনুষ্ঠান সঞ্চালনা করেন।
সাংবাদিকদের সেরা রিপোর্টিংয়ের পুরস্কার দেওয়ার পাশাপাশি অনুষ্ঠানে ইআরএফের পক্ষ থেকে বিশিষ্ট অর্থনীতিবিদ ওয়াহিদউদ্দিন মাহমুদকে আজীবন সম্মাননা ও স্বর্ণপদক দেওয়া হয়। এ ছাড়া সম্মাননা ও স্বর্ণপদক দেওয়া হয় ইআরএফের দুই স্বপ্নদ্রষ্টা শামসুল হক জাহিদ ও শহীদুজ্জামানকে।
দেশের অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়নে পুরস্কারপ্রাপ্তসহ সব অর্থনৈতিক সাংবাদিকই অবদান রাখছেন বলে মনে করেন অর্থমন্ত্রী। তিনজনকে বিশেষ সম্মাননা ও স্বর্ণপদক দেওয়ার কারণে তাঁর অনেক ভালো লাগছে বলেও প্রতিক্রিয়া জানান।
অর্থমন্ত্রী বলেন, অর্থনৈতিক উন্নয়ন হলে সবাই তার সুফল পায়। তিনি বলেন, একসময় রেহমান সোবহান প্রমাণ করে দিয়েছিলেন যে পাকিস্তানে দুটি অর্থনীতি বিরাজ করছিল। তারপরই তো মুক্তিযুদ্ধের ইতিহাস ও বিজয়।
মুক্তিযুদ্ধের সময় বাংলাদেশের দুই-তৃতীয়াংশ ক্ষতিগ্রস্ত হয়েছিল বলে তখনকার একটি প্রতিবেদনের কথা স্মরণ করেন অর্থমন্ত্রী। তিনি বলেন, দুর্ভাগ্যবশত প্রত্যক্ষ-পরোক্ষভাবে দেশে ১৬ বছর সামরিক শাসন চলেছে। ১৯৯১-এর পর থেকে দেশে নতুন দিগন্ত উন্মোচিত হয়। প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা ২০০১ সাল থেকে কাজে লাগাচ্ছেন বলে তাঁর প্রতি কৃতজ্ঞতা প্রকাশ করেন অর্থমন্ত্রী।
রেহমান সোবহান বলেন, সাংবাদিকেরা জনগণের জন্য তথ্য তুলে আনেন। তাঁরা শুধু পেশাগত দায়িত্বই পালন করছেন না, অর্থনীতি ও জাতির জন্যও কাজ করে যাচ্ছেন।

ইআরএফ পুরস্কার পেলেন ৫ সাংবাদিক

সমকালের স্টাফ রিপোর্টার ওবায়দুল্লাহ রনিসহ ৫ সাংবাদিক এবার অর্থনৈতিক রিপোটার্স ফোরামের (ইআরএফ) অ্যাওয়ার্ড পেয়েছেন। শনিবার রাজধানীর হোটেল সোনারগাঁওয়ে এক অনুষ্ঠানে অর্থমন্ত্রী আবুল মাল আব্দুল মুহিত এবং বেসরকারি গবেষণা সংস্থা সিপিডি চেয়ারম্যান অধ্যাপক রেহমান সোবহান তাদের হাতে পুরস্কার তুলে দেন।
অনুষ্ঠানে লাইফ টাইম এচিবমেন্টের জন্য অর্থনীতিবিদ ওয়াহিদউদ্দিন মাহমুদকে সম্মাননা দেওয়া হয়। ইআরএফের অন্যতম প্রতিষ্ঠাতা দৈনিক ফাইন্যান্সিয়াল এক্সপ্রেসের যুগ্ম সম্পাদক এবং আরেক প্রতিষ্ঠাতা সদস্য নিউজ নেটওয়ার্কের সম্পাদক শহিদুজ্জামানকে বিশেষ সম্মাননা দেওয়া হয়।
সমকালের ওবায়দুল্লাহ রনি ব্যাংক ও আর্থিক প্রতিষ্ঠান বিষয়ে শ্রেষ্ঠ রিপোর্টিংয়ের জন্য অ্যাওয়ার্ড পেয়েছেন। তার সঙ্গে যুগ্মভাবে একই বিষয়ে অ্যাওয়ার্ড পেয়েছেন প্রথম আলোর সাবেক বিশেষ প্রতিনিধি মনজুর আহমেদ। সামষ্টিক অর্থনীতি বিষয়ে পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন ডেইলি স্টারের সোহেল পারভেজ। ভোক্তা অধিকার ও আর্থিক দুর্নীতি এবং পুঁজিবাজার বিষয়ে পুরস্কার পেয়েছেন প্রথম আলোর যথাক্রমে ফখরুল ইসলাম হারুন ও সুজয় মহাজন।
