Student Research Poster Exhibition and Contest on Air and Plastic Pollution

CALL FOR RESEARCH POSTERS

Context

Dhaka, the capital city of Bangladesh, is facing significant challenges in managing air and plastic pollution. The city’s rapid urbanization and industrialization have resulted in high levels of air pollution, while plastic waste has become a major environmental problem. As future leaders and professionals, students can play a crucial role in generating knowledge and solutions to these pressing environmental issues.

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has undertaken a programme titled “Green Cities Initiative”[1] which aims to understand the nexus between air and plastic pollution and the economy of Bangladesh, and make relevant policy recommendations. The Green Cities Initiative will focus on two broad thematic areas: i) air pollution; and ii) plastic pollution. The key objective of the study is to look at the drivers, impacts, and solutions with regard to air and plastic pollution in major cities of Bangladesh, and recommend policies to reduce both types of pollution. The Green Cities Initiative aims to make cities green and environment-friendly through the reduction of pollution from air and plastic.

As part of this study, CPD will organise a student research poster session with undergraduate and graduate students. This student research poster session provides an opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their research on air and plastic pollution in Dhaka. By fostering interdisciplinary collaborations and identifying potential solutions and policy recommendations, the poster session can contribute to the development of effective strategies for addressing air and plastic pollution in Dhaka. Moreover, it can inspire and motivate future generations of students to engage in research and innovation to solve the most pressing environmental challenges of our time.

Objectives

The objective of this student research poster session is to provide a platform for undergraduate and graduate students to showcase their research on air and plastic pollution in Dhaka city. The session will cover the following objectives:

  • Highlight the current state of knowledge on air and plastic pollution in Dhaka city
  • Explore innovative research methods and technologies for studying air and plastic pollution in Dhaka
  • Foster interdisciplinary collaborations among students and faculty working on air and plastic pollution in Dhaka
  • Identify potential solutions and policy recommendations for addressing air and plastic pollution in Dhaka

Methodology

The poster session will feature research projects from undergraduate and graduate students from different universities in Dhaka. The session will be open to all disciplines, including natural sciences, engineering, social sciences, and humanities. The poster session will provide an opportunity for students to present their research, receive feedback from their peers and faculty, and engage in interdisciplinary discussions about the challenges and opportunities of studying air and plastic pollution in Dhaka.

Target Participants

The poster session is targeted at Bangladeshi national students currently enrolled in undergraduate or graduate programmes in any university, and within the age of 18 to 35 years old, who are conducting research on air and plastic pollution in Dhaka.

Expected Outcomes

By the end of the poster session, participants will have gained a better understanding of the current state of knowledge on air and plastic pollution in Dhaka. They will also have learned about innovative research methods and technologies for studying air and plastic pollution, and have developed networks with peers and faculty working on these issues. Moreover, the poster session will identify potential solutions and policy recommendations for addressing air and plastic pollution in Dhaka, which can inform future research and policy decisions.

Output

The top two posters selected by the panel of judges, one related to air pollution and another related to plastic pollution, will each receive a prize money equivalent to BDT 20,000. Additionally, some shortlisted posters will be published on CPD’s website and social media accounts.
