Pre-Budget discussion with Chattogram students

Resources

More than a hundred students, mostly studying economics across different universities in Chattogram, joined a pre-budget discussion arranged by CPD in collaboration with Youth Engagement Support (YES) – Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) at the Kakoli Hall, Hotel Saint Martin, Chattogram, on 13 May 2018.

CPD’s Executive Director, Dr Fahmida Khatun and Distinguished Fellow, Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya explained the process of budgeting in general and some core budgetary issues for Bangladesh in specific.

Among others, resource allocation was discussed as allocation needs to be priority based. This was explained by using the example of low budgetary allocation for education in Bangladesh, which, as an outcome, deteriorated the quality of education leading to higher unemployment.

While discussing macro-economy, it was suggested for the coming budget to strategically address exchange rate, i.e. fiscal policy, as this seemed to be a weaker area.

It was an interactive session—students had questions and shared their views.
