Bangladesh Economy in FY2020–21: Interim Review of Macroeconomic Performance

    As part of its regular exercise to review the performance of the economy and analyse the key emerging trends, the Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) closely monitors the country’s economy throughout a fiscal year. In this connection, CPD’s flagship Independent Review of Bangladesh’s Development (IRBD) publication delineates an analysis of the macroeconomic performance of Bangladesh economy in FY2020–21 in context of the unprecedented impacts of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The book contains CPD IRBD’s three readings of the Bangladesh economy.

    The first chapter, State of the Bangladesh Economy in FY2020–21 (Third Reading), highlights the issues of macroeconomic management, food price volatility, monetary policy, and the uncertainties and challenges in the banking sector. It also analyses the impacts of the pandemic on the economy and policy measures taken by the government.

    The second chapter, State of the Bangladesh Economy in FY2020–21 (Second Reading): CPD’s Budget Recommendations, particularly focuses on CPD’s recommendations for the upcoming budget and covers areas including macroeconomic scenario particularly in view of the pandemic, revenue mobilisation, budget deficit and financing, and public expenditure.

    State of the Bangladesh Economy in FY2020–21 (First Reading) is included as the third chapter. This chapter presents an analytical framework to assess the state of rebound and recovery of the Bangladesh economy in the backdrop of the ongoing pandemic. It also examines the movements of major macroeconomic correlates, reviews performance of the agriculture sector, analyses performance of the industrial sector and perceptions of key stakeholders as regards near-term recovery, and presents an analysis of the key performance indicators concerning the banking sector, particularly in view of the stimulus packages disbursed through the banking sector, to assess the prospects of rebounds and recovery.
