The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) is deeply shocked and saddened by the passing of its Board member, Eminent Business Leader and former adviser to the Caretaker Government, Mr Syed Manzur Elahi.
Mr Elahi, Chairman of the Apex Group and the founding Chairman of Mutual Trust Bank PLC (MTB), was a pillar in the business community of Bangladesh. His remarkable journey in trade and industry was marked by profound leadership and innovation, which positioned the Apex Group as a leading business conglomerate nationally and internationally. Besides being an eminent industrialist, he was also appointed Adviser to the Caretaker Government of Bangladesh, twice (1996 & 2001), for his leadership qualities, professionalism, and non-partisanship.
In addition to his significant corporate roles across the Apex Group, Mr Elahi’s extensive contributions covered various educational and financial institutions. He was a beacon of guidance and inspiration, deeply involved in shaping policies and fostering growth across multiple sectors. He also served as a director of International Publications Limited, the parent company of one of the English National Dailies, The Financial Express.
CPD mourns his loss deeply. Mr Syed Manzur Elahi was a well-wisher of CPD and was actively involved in various CPD activities. He was a member of the Citizen’s Committee during the ‘Honest and Competent Candidate Campaign’ launched by CPD in 2006. Under this initiative, CPD prepared the ‘Vision 2021’ document for which we received his valuable input and guidance.
His suggestions enriched CPD’s work, and he frequently chaired CPD dialogues, where his insightful comments stimulated thoughtful discussions among participants. His bold and perceptive opinions inspired many. His absence will create a significant void in the business sector.
CPD has lost a guardian and leader who steered CPD through his profound wisdom and progressive insights. CPD family expresses sincere condolences to the members of his bereaved family. May his departed soul rest in peace.
