Professor Mustafizur Rahman, Executive Director, CPD Chaired the session on “Improving Workers and Consumer Welfare: Skills and Literacy, Labor and Work Safety,” which was held in Dhaka on October 23, 2013 as part of the validation workshop for the Bangladesh Diagnostic Trade Integration Study (DTIS).
The event was organised jointly by the Ministry of Commerce, GoB, and the World Bank which carried out the DTIS.
In his comments, Professor Rahman underscored the need for skill upgradation in the country’s export-oriented sectors as a core strategy to increase capital and labour productivity and to raise Bangladesh’s export competitiveness in the global market. He emphasised the need to ensure better wage, safer work environment, improved safety and security and more stringent enforcement of workers’ rights.
Professor Rahman argued that these steps would have positive impact on productivity and overall environment in the industrial sector of Bangladesh. He also thought entrepreneurs would benefit if such steps are taken and that the investments made in this connection will result in good dividends for all involved stakeholders – good returns for entrepreneurs, enhanced welfare for workers and promotion of brand Bangladesh.
