‘Graft still big challenge’ to development

CHITTAGONG, Mar 18: Despite improvement in the corruption index of the country due to different steps taken by the government graft still poses a big challenge to development, a seminar has been told.
Referring to the TIB Corruption Conception Index experts said Bangladesh still stands 145th out of 176 countries, and except Afghanistan the position of Bangladesh is at the lowest among South Asian countries. The seminar on New Global Development Agenda: Peace and Security, Human Rights and Governance was organised at a hotel in the port city on Saturday.
Citizens’ Platform for SDG Bangladesh, in association with the Community Development Centre (CODEC) and the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) organised it.
Chittagong City Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin spoke on the occasion as the chief guest while East Delta University vice chancellor Professor Sekander Khan and eminent educationist Professor Ferdous Ara Aleem spoke as special guests.
Core Group member of the Citizens’ Platform and executive director of Manusher Jonno Foundation Ms Shaheen Anam gave the introductory statement.
Chaired by Convener of the Citizens’ Platform and Honorary Fellow of the CPD (Centre for Policy Dialogue) Professor Debapriya Bhattacharya the event was also addressed by deputy executive director of CIDEC Kamol Sengupta, Sachetan Nagorik Committee’s Chittagong unit president Engineer Delwar Majumder and coordinator of the Citizens’ Platform and CPD director Anisatul Fatema Yusuf.
Dr. Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of the TIB and Core Group member of the Citizens’ Platform, presented the keynote paper at the session.
The speakers said it is possible alone for the government or citizens’ platform to ensure peace, security, human rights and good governance. The government must play its role in a coordinated was with others from their respective positions in the context of the prevailing reality of the country. They emphasised participation of all stakeholders, including public representatives, government, private sector, civil society organisations, knowledge community and development partners in the implementation process for attaining Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Peace, HR key areas for SDG achievement
Chittagong: Speakers at a dialogue here on Saturday said peace, security, human rights and good governance will be the key priority areas in achieving the Agenda 2030 for sustainable development, reports UNB.
The Bangladesh government has taken measures over the past few years to reform laws and strengthen institutional initiatives to establish good governance in the administrative system, they said laying emphasis on citizen’s awareness and strengthening institutional capacity to achieve sustainable development goals (SDGs).
They observed that unfortunately the advantages of these initiatives have not reflected on public life, for which it is essential to increase citizen’s awareness, strengthen administrative capacities and make political will visible.
Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh, in association with Transparency International Bangladesh’s (TIB) Sachetan Nagarik Committee (SANAC), Chittagong and the Community Development Centre (CODEC), Chittagong arranged the dialogue titled ‘The New Global Development Agenda: Peace and Security, Human Rights and Governance’.
City Mayor AJM Nasiruddin attended the dialogue as the chief guest with convenor of the Citizen’s Platform and Distinguished Fellow, Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) Dr Debapriya Bhattacharya in the chair.
Vice Chancellor of East Delta University, Chittagong Prof Sekandar Khan, eminent educationist Prof Ferdous Ara Alim attended as special guests, said a press release.
Executive Director of TIB and Core Group Member of the Citizen’s Platform Dr Iftekharuzzaman made the keynote presentation at the session, highlighting that institutional and policy framework that would be helpful in establishing good governance and control corruption.
Transparency and accountability of the political parties are essential elements of the democratic system that impact other institutions of democracy, said the participants.
Discussants at the event highlighted that attaining SDGs require inclusiveness of different marginalised groups who lag behind in the development landscape of the country.
