Visit Home: Post-Rana Plaza Monitoring: A Civil Society Initiative
The Rana Plaza incident on 24 April 2013 that took the lives of 1,131 RMG workers has once again drawn the attention of all concerned citizens to the persisting hazards in the export-oriented RMG sector of the country.
On 18 May 2013, three months since the incident, CPD convened the first meeting with a number of leaders of civil society organisations. In view of the Rana Plaza tragedy, the meeting explored whether CPD, in partnership with a number of institutions and individuals, could come together with the intent to undertake regular and systematic monitoring of the actions undertaken by major stakeholders.
Dr Khondker Golam Moazzem, Additional Research Director, CPD made a presentation titled “Citizen’s Coalition on (follow-ups of) Recent Disasters in the RMG Sector”. The idea was to undertake an audit of what is being done, to identify the gaps and to put pressure on key stakeholders so that appropriate and adequate actions are taken.
The partnership believes that we owe it to the dead that incidences such as Rana Plaza does not happen again and that together with others who are working in this area, we should do everything towards ensuring decent working and living conditions for the workers in the RMG industry of Bangladesh.
