[/fusion_title][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” class=”” id=””]Under its flagship programme, Independent Review of Bangladesh’s Development (IRBD), CPD’s analyses was published in a book titled Bangladesh Economy in FY2017-18: Interim Review of Macroeconomic Performance. Amongst many macroeconomic concerns identified by CPD, special light was shed on the ongoing banking malignancy. A dialoguewas organised with relevant stakeholders to find a way out of the banking sector crisis. CPD made a commitment of forming a Citizen’s Commission after the election to report on the state of the banking sector and identify the causes and remedies of the crisis. The report will be shared with the new government.

[/fusion_title][fusion_text columns=”” column_min_width=”” column_spacing=”” rule_style=”default” rule_size=”” rule_color=”” class=”” id=””]As the Secretariat of the Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh, CPD is working to build an inclusive society which is also a part CPD’s own mission. The focus of this year’s work was mostly to make proper use of Bangladesh’s demographic dividend by utilising the youth, especially, youth of the vulnerable communities. Citizen’s Platform for SDGs, Bangladesh organised a day-long conference titled Youth Conference 2018 that intended to improve the knowledge of youth regarding SDGs. The conference highlighted the aspirations of the youth and how the potentials of the youth can be utilised to accelerate mainstream development. The Youth Declaration 2018 was approved in the conference. CPD in partnership with UN ESCAP South and South-West Asia Office (UN ESCAP-SSWA)and Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES), Bangladesh is embarking on a multi-country research and policy initiative, Interpreting SDGs for South Asia: In Search of a Regional Framework.

This report provided a systematic exploration of the nature and causes of youth unemployment in Bangladesh. The study delved into the reasons of both male and female youth unemployment and presented a set of recommendations.

In 2018, CPD continued working towards ensuring long-term sustainability, strengthened participation in global value chain and enhanced competitiveness of Bangladesh’s export-oriented RMG sector. A major contribution of CPD includes the works done under the CPD-RMG study. The study provided a great insights of the RMG sector during post-Rana Plaza tragedy. An interim report of the study was presented at a dialogue and the study concluded with validating the findings and recommendations at a conference. Alongside the CPD-RMG study, CPD also contributed to the RMG sector by organising a timely dialogue, prior to the setting of the minimum wage for RMG workers. CPD presented the livelihood conditions of the RMG workers and proposed a minimum wage for the workers.

A dialogue was organised to discuss these findings from the book titled Challenging Injustice in South Asia: A Work Programme for Promoting Inclusive Development by Professor Rehman Sobhan, Chairman, CPD. The recommendations from the book are in six broad areas to promote inclusive development in Bangladesh and other South Asian countries which includes enhancing market power of the excluded and broadening ownership of assets through collective action.

Professor Jomo Kwame Sundaram, a leading economist and expert on the political economy, delivered the CPD Annual Lecture 2018 titled Assessing the Challenges of SDG Implementation: Food, energy and inequality, which particularly emphasised on misconception of hunger and lack of global political willingness to use renewable energy. Besides, CPD organised a public lecture on Knowledge to Share, Planet to Care by Pascal Lamy, former director general of World Trade Organisation (WTO) and Special Envoy of the French Government.
